A Trophy Property

A trophy property is a recognized category of real estate in the U.S. and elsewhere. It is generally defined as the top 2% of properties within a given subcategory. While real estate appraisers in the U.S. have long recognized trophy properties as having unique valuation characteristics, only recently have the appraisal organizations begun to codify appropriate methods and techniques. Dr. Bill Mundy, one of the appraisal community’s leading experts on the topic, authored a series of articles for the Appraisal Journal in 1991, 2002 and 2003.

The Bank of America Plaza is the tallest building in the southern United States, and the tallest in any state capital. Located on 3.7 acres on Peachtree Street, the tower faces its border streets at a 45-degree angle to maximize the views to the north and south.

Atlanta’s Bank of America Plaza

In 2008, Atlanta’s Bank of America Plaza was listed as the world’s 25th tallest building, only about 23 feet shorter than New York’s Chrysler Building and New York Times Building, Dubai’s Burj al Arab hotel and Hong Kong’s Nina Towers. The Atlanta skyscraper is about seven feet taller than Los Angeles’ U.S. Bank Building, which is the tallest North American skyscraper west of the Mississippi.
